What R-Value should you buy?
The Building Code of Australia (BCA) has outlined energy efficiency provisions for new homes which include the inclusion of insulation in ceilings, walls, and some floors. The value of insulation required to meet the deemed-to-satisfy provisions for energy efficiency is intended to be seen as a minimum standard – not best practice.
R-values are the measuring tool we use to rate the level of thermal resistance. Essentially, the higher the R-Value the more effective the insulation is. Bradford Gold wall batts are available in R-Values from R1.5 – R2.0. Manufactured from glasswool, the batts are specially stiffened and treated to provide moisture-resistant insulation – meeting the Building Code of Australia’s minimum requirements for energy efficiency in homes. The glasswool we use is made up of very thin glass fibers that are spun like fairy floss to create millions of air pockets. These air pockets are very poor conductors of heat and resist the flow of air or radiation through the insulation.
Note that the use of high levels of insulation to meet energy efficiency and comfort requirements can lead to an increased incidence of condensation in walls and attic spaces in cold climates. This is because of the insulation’s effectiveness at keeping the warmth within the home but vapor’s ability to pass through plasterboard and standard insulation. To address potential condensation problems Bradford recommends the installation of an Anticon roofing blanket under metal roofs where the ceiling is insulated. The inclusion of building membranes with high permeability, such as Enviroseal ProctorWrap, and the inclusions of roof ventilators will also help minimise the incidence of condensation.
